Sector | Agro-processing sector supported by logistics |
Description of the Project | In 2013, the Mpumalanga Provincial Executive Committee took a decision to pursue the designation of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) within the province. A pre-feasibility study was conducted to identify the strategic resources and the location that would optimise the key objectives of the SEZ programme. The study indicated that SEZ will be implemented in Nkomazi Local Municipality, Komatipoort.
One of the key objectives of the SEZ programme, is to create jobs through value-addition (industrialisation) of locally available resources. The Nkomazi area was identified as the most strategically located area for agro-processing, and logistics industries. The proposed SEZ site in Nkomazi is strategically located along the N4 Maputo Corridor, and is within 200km of most of the agricultural commodities required for the targeted agro-processing industries. The Nkomazi SEZ has adopted the theme “From Endowment to Abundance”, indicating its clear focus to beneficiate the natural endowments of the region into economic prosperity derived from significant participation in national and global supply chains, supported by inclusive growth. The Nkomazi SEZ is designed to be a multi-sectorial industrial zone focused on the following: 1. Agro-processing covering: · Citrus fruits; · Subtropical fruits; · Aromatic plants; · Ground and tree nuts; 2. Formulation and production of nutraceuticals; 3. Refining of nutritional oils; 4.
